Two out of three bad reviews never get a reply, and the average business takes nearly three days to answer the ones it does. On a bakery listing that is a complaint sitting at the top with nothing underneath it, being read by everyone deciding where to go tonight. Starlie has your answer written the day it lands.

One review, read the way Starlie reads it

The kind of review bakeries get. Starlie worked out everything underneath it from those sentences and nothing else.

I ordered a birthday cake for my daughter and it was exactly what I asked for, right down to the colour, and ready on time. I grabbed a couple of cinnamon rolls while I was waiting and they were still warm. The sourdough loaf was sold out by ten, which is the only reason I am not in there every Saturday.

One review is never a theme. Starlie waits until two people say it in the same week before it tells you anything moved.

Thanks for this, Tom. Glad the Birthday Cake and Cinnamon Roll hit the mark. Come and see us again. — Kate

Starlie learns your items, custom orders and staff

Every review names things. Starlie keeps a running count of what was said about each of your items, custom orders and staff, with the sentence it came from, and it refuses to turn a handful of opinions into a score.

Your items

Starlie will not summarise one until six people have mentioned it. Below that you get the quotes and the count, because a handful of opinions is not a score.

Your custom orders

Starlie will not summarise one until six people have mentioned it. Below that you get the quotes and the count, because a handful of opinions is not a score.

Your staff

Starlie will not summarise a member of staff until eight customers have named them. A summary about a person gets read as a performance review, so it costs more.

Counter

The items customers name, how the custom orders went, and what people say about things being fresh and ready on time. It is a screen in Starlie that only bakeries get, next to the inbox, and it is built out of the same reviews — nothing on it was typed in by you.

Your team is safe here

Praise that names somebody is kept and shown to you. A complaint that names somebody is counted as a complaint about how a customer was treated, and the name is not stored with it. There is no file on anybody in Starlie.

What Starlie will not sit on until morning

The things that go wrong in bakeries and cannot wait. Starlie knows these phrases and what to suggest when one turns up.

Someone says they were ill after eating something from here. The same batch went out to everybody else who came in that morning.

Find out what they bought and which day, and check what else went out of that batch. Reply privately today. Do not discuss the illness in a public reply.

An allergy went wrong. In a bakery everything shares a bench, and this is the complaint that can seriously hurt somebody.

Check today what was in that item and what it was baked next to, and talk to whoever took the order. Reply privately and promise nothing about ingredients in public.

Something was in the food that should not have been, or it had gone off.

Pull anything from that batch that is still in the case, then reply privately and offer to put it right.

A custom order failed on the day it was for. That day cannot be redone and the review will say so for years.

Call them today rather than replying online first. Check the order book for anything else due this week while you are in it.

Three interruptions a week at most, and nothing before seven in the morning or after ten at night, unless it is the kind of thing you would want to be woken for.

What a reply from your shop must never say

Starlie reads its own reply back before you are allowed to approve it. These are the ones that only matter in your trade.

  • Never promise in public that something is free of an allergen, and never discuss a customer's reaction there.

  • A custom order was for a private occasion. Do not repeat what it was for in a public reply.

  • Never explain in public how long something had been out or how it was baked. It is read as an admission.

  • Do not point at whoever made it. A reply that names the person is the one they read.

Not quite your shop?

Starlie reads reviews the same way for every kind of local business. What changes is what it pulls out of the sentences, and what it will wake you for.
