Two out of three bad reviews never get a reply, and the average business takes nearly three days to answer the ones it does. On a restaurant listing that is a complaint sitting at the top with nothing underneath it, being read by everyone deciding where to go tonight. Starlie has your answer written the day it lands.

One review, read the way Starlie reads it

The kind of review restaurants get. Starlie worked out everything underneath it from those sentences and nothing else.

Came in on Friday with my sister and we will be back. The pad thai was the best I have had in this city and the chicken satay came out fast and still hot. The tom yum goong was way too salty though, we left most of it. We also waited nearly twenty minutes for a table on a quiet night.

What else it touched on

  • Waiting too longWe also waited nearly twenty minutes for a table on a quiet night.

One review is never a theme. Starlie waits until two people say it in the same week before it tells you anything moved.

The reply waiting for you

Thank you for the kind words, Priya. We put a lot of care into the Pad Thai and Chicken Satay, so that is worth hearing. I want to look at the wait. Hope to see you again soon. — Maria

Starlie learns your dishes and servers

Every review names things. Starlie keeps a running count of what was said about each of your dishes and servers, with the sentence it came from, and it refuses to turn a handful of opinions into a score.

Your dishes

Starlie will not summarise one until six people have mentioned it. Below that you get the quotes and the count, because a handful of opinions is not a score.

Your servers

Starlie will not summarise a server until eight customers have named them. A summary about a person gets read as a performance review, so it costs more.

Menu

Every dish a customer named, what they said about it, and the dishes nobody has mentioned yet. It is a screen in Starlie that only restaurants get, next to the inbox, and it is built out of the same reviews — nothing on it was typed in by you.

Your team is safe here

Praise that names somebody is kept and shown to you. A complaint that names somebody is counted as a complaint about how a customer was treated, and the name is not stored with it. There is no file on anybody in Starlie.

What Starlie will not sit on until morning

The things that go wrong in restaurants and cannot wait. Starlie knows these phrases and what to suggest when one turns up.

Someone says they got ill after eating here. If it is real, other people ate the same thing tonight.

Find out what they ordered and when they came in, check tonight who else was served it, and reply privately today. Do not discuss the illness in a public reply.

An allergy went wrong. This is the one thing in a kitchen that can hurt somebody the same week it happens.

Check tonight which dish it was and how it is prepared, and talk to whoever took the order. Reply privately and do not confirm anything about the ingredients in public.

Something was in the food that should not have been, or it was not cooked through.

Ask the kitchen tonight what was on that station and pull anything questionable. Reply privately and offer to make it right off the review.

A public review is saying the place is not clean. It spreads faster than any other kind of review and it can bring an inspection.

Walk the room and the kitchen tonight before you write anything. Reply the same day, short, saying what you checked and that you take it seriously.

Three interruptions a week at most, and nothing before seven in the morning or after ten at night, unless it is the kind of thing you would want to be woken for.

What a reply from your shop must never say

Starlie reads its own reply back before you are allowed to approve it. These are the ones that only matter in your trade.

  • Never discuss a customer's illness or allergy in a public reply. Move it to a private message.

  • Never bring up inspections in a public reply, even to defend yourself. It plants the idea for everyone reading.

  • Explaining a bad night by blaming the kitchen reads as an excuse and names your own people.

  • Never describe how the food is sourced or prepared in a public reply. It is quoted back forever.

Not quite your shop?

Starlie reads reviews the same way for every kind of local business. What changes is what it pulls out of the sentences, and what it will wake you for.
